Strathearn Arts Receives Grant to Upgrade Cinema Experience

Crieff 1st July, 2020: Strathearn Arts today announced that it had been successful in its grant application to Screen Scotland’s Cinema Equipment Fund.

"Strathearn Arts' popular cinema programme has long since offered great cinema experiences for local audiences,” commented Screen Scotland's Jennifer Armitage. “We're acutely aware of the tough financial challenges facing community cinemas in rural locations alongside the important role they play. We're therefore delighted that this National Lottery funding will support their efforts to develop and expand the range and quality of their cinema offering into the future.”

The grant will support the purchase of a new projector, retractable screen, satellite receiver and related items which will significantly improve the existing film-watching experience and open up a new range of opportunities.

“Not only will our existing audiences benefit from better image quality when they enjoy films at Strathearn Arts, we will now be able to offer additional, live-screening events from all over the world which will allow us to appeal to wider and more diverse audiences.” Said Angela Lennon, Arts Programme Coordinator at Strathearn Arts.

Live streaming facilities have already proved popular in Perth, Stirling and Aberfeldy, allowing local audiences to watch live performances from, for example, the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, Opera from New York’s Metropolitan Opera House or the concerts from the Royal Albert Hall.

“Once installed” continued Angela, “this equipment gives a host of options for us to significantly expand our cinema offerings and we will look forward to hearing suggestions and ideas from our audiences and other local groups as to how best we can use this for the enjoyment of everyone within our community”.

Strathearn Arts will be working to install the equipment over the Summer and, Government guidance on social distancing allowing, aim to have it up and running later this year.

“The screenings at Strathearn Arts”, explained Claire Baker, MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife “provide access to films for many who would otherwise miss out and this funding will open up their services to a wider audience still.”

Strathearn Arts signs 5 year lease to 2, Comrie St

Crieff August 12th , 2020: Strathearn Arts today announced that it has signed a lease on the shop unit, formerly occupied by Luke Graham MP, on the corner of Comrie St and Lodge St in Crieff town Centre.

“Leasing these premises will be transformative for our organisation and will be a real benefit for the people of Strathearn” said Gordon Wright, Chairman of Strathearn Arts. “Having a shop-window for Strathearn Arts right in the heart of Crieff will increase our visibility and profile and make it easier for locals and visitors alike to pop in and find out what’s happening within our vibrant and talented local arts and music community.”

Since its foundation in 2013, Strathearn Arts has occupied the former library building at 6, Comrie Street. This consists of a large auditorium seating 184 people and a number of other gallery and meeting and office spaces, all of which are available to rent for private meetings and events. In 2016, grants from the Scottish Government allowed Strathearn Arts to acquire the whole building from the council.

The new space at 2, Comrie St will immediately become the main reception, admin desk and box office for Strathearn Arts thereby freeing up space within the main hall and increasing its capacity to well over 200 seats. It will also give an additional option for those looking to hire meeting, exhibition or event space and offers the potential to develop retail and catering offerings in the future.

“Apart from the many clear benefits it will bring to our organisation and to the arts community of the Strathearn as a whole,” Gordon explained, “we are delighted to be doing our part to rejuvenate the town centre too. Taking an empty shop unit in central Crieff and filling it with light and colour, not to mention our hard-working team of staff and volunteers, will add a new energy and enthusiasm to this corner of the town.”
