Dance for Health is an online dance class for all. The health benefits of dance, both physical and mental, are well documented and Strathearn Arts, together with qualified dance instructor, Janice Fraser, are determined to get everyone dancing!
Originally established in early 2020, it was aimed primarily at those living with Parkinson's and other motor neurological conditions offering them in-person dance/exercise. The project had only been running for two weeks when it had to be suspended because of Coronavirus restrictions. With support from The National Lottery Community Fund and the Scottish Government, it has now been adapted for online delivery and is offered three times a week via Zoom.
The benefits are not just for physical health, the social element of each class is proving extremely important for tackling social isolation and emotional wellbeing.
Dance for Health now benefits a much wider range of people than the original focus on Parkinson's. These include people with any kind of mobility or other challenges, including: those who are shielding; with certain types of cancer; arthritis; early stage dementia; or, recovering from illness or major surgery.
What Participants Say
Participant with MS
Your class has been a tonic for me both as the movement and music inspire me to keep moving!
The results are amazing! My blood pressure is more normal so (my) medication has been reduced. The physio says I am very flexible and to continue doing all the exercises. My balance has improved a lot.

Attending this class definitely helps with my health and wellbeing. I am sure I am getting stronger after a hip replacement and I am looking forward to playing bowls again.
Participant
Overall I feel less anxious about my physical and mental health.

Dance for Health on Zoom is a regular event I can attend whilst working from home, where I became inactive through the Covid lock down and I wasn’t exercising at all… Attending this class regularly helped me to feel physically well and this helped to improve my mental health as well. It’s a really friendly group of people and I look forward to the class and attend as often as I can.
